Just because you backup, doesn’t mean you are archiving.

One of the biggest misconceptions I have run into time-and-time again in meetings with potential clients is the thought of backup and archiving being the exact same thing.  It is very easy to get the two confused, or even think you need one but not the other. Every time I bring this topic forward, many CXO’s tell me since they have a backup solution; they see no need for an archiving solution.  Before I elaborate, take a moment to look at the comparison between the two below:

After seeing the comparison between the two, does it make sense to backup instead of archiving data you are required to store for multiple years? If you answered yes to this question, you may not be realizing the full cost saving potential of migrating your data to less expensive storage tiers. Also, an archiving solution allows you the ability to quickly search for specific information rather than digging through hundreds of different folders to find the specific file you were looking for, which may not be there, if using a backup solution for archiving.

Hi RickLaCoume, Thanks for your posting; because it is really learning for me; this is really new & strange to me since I haven't faced such a issue or concern till now ( I am in storage and backup); but still would like to know on this "Just because you backup, does mean you are archiving" Since words from CXO, there should be some reasons behind it (as per business focus), what are the parameters used to say that both are same; it may help me to understand the business and technology focus
