What percentage of your annual IT-spend is eaten up by your mainframe environment?

According to Gartner’s last report on key mainframe metrics, the mainframe infrastructure environment alone can represent up to 20% of the total annual IT spend for some in-house IT operations – with the average hovering around 7%.  And that doesn’t even include mainframe storage-related expenses, mainframe application development and management and associated print management solutions.

It’s no wonder we see “cost reduction” represented as the top priority for most mainframe operations in the annual BMC Mainframe Survey and Arcati Mainframe Yearbook survey.

In almost all cases, there are things that can be done gain better control of your mainframe-related costs – but actual cost reductions will obviously vary based on what aspects of your operation you choose to focus on, the scope of the change (i.e. hardware, software, staff, automation, etc.), and the investment your staff is able to make to help create savings and operational improvements within the environment.dollar sign.jpg

To jump-start your thinking about ways to reduce the mainframe’s share of your annual IT spend …check out this paper on Managing Mainframe Costs.  It summarizes some of the key factors leading to rising mainframe costs, shares thoughts on cost reduction options, and explains why outsourcing is one of those options.

Great post, Shawna.  Reducing the maintenance charges in the mainframe environment is a key step to flipping the 80/20 maintenance/innovation IT spending trap.  http://bit.ly/jqVbms
