In a discussion to be held at HP Discover 2014 on June 12th, three of HP Labs’ most senior technologists will offer their outlook on the future of technology, and suggest how that future might transform the world as we know it today.

The Innovation Theater panel session, titled ‘Star Trek or Skynet? The Future According to HP Labs,’ will examine emerging technology trends and suggest which of them are likely to have a significant impact in the next decade and beyond. “We’ll pay particular attention to some of the really ground-breaking research we’re already undertaking at HP Labs,” says panel member Martin Sadler, VP and director, Security and Cloud Lab. “We’ll look both at how that work is addressing the most complex technical challenges that HP customers are likely to face, and at how it promises to impact the world more broadly in the longer term.”

Joining Sadler will be John Sontag, VP and director, Systems Research Lab and Jaap Suermondt, VP and director, Analytics Lab. The discussion will be moderated by Martina Trucco, HP Labs’ Manager of Strategic Planning and Communications.

In addition to examining new advances in areas like universal memory, big data analytics, the Internet of Things, and high-bandwidth networking, the panel will explore the demographic, social, and environmental ‘megatrends’ likely to impact what we will need technology to do for us in the future. The session’s title, with its reference of contrasting future science-fiction scenarios, alludes to the complexities businesses and societies will face in implementing new and emerging technologies in the future: “The world is changing in significant ways along a number of vectors,” Sadler suggests. “Our aim is to harness the disruptive power of technology to let us keep improving our lives in that uncertain world.”

Discover attendees can attend the discussion on June 12th, from 11:15 to 11:35 PM in the Innovation Theater.
