Joint HP Labs, HP and Columbia University team wins prestigious operations research prize

A team of researchers and practitioners from HP Labs, HP and Columbia University has been honored by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) with the 2012 INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Practice Award. The award recognizes outstanding applications of revenue management and pricing techniques, and the winner is selected based on the impact, originality, and technical merit of the solution presented.

The interdisciplinary team was composed of researchers from HP Labs’ Information Analytics Lab and Columbia University and practitioners from HP’s Printing and Personal Systems Group, tackling a real-world challenge faced by HP’s product divisions.

According to Warren Lieberman, Chair of the Awards Committee, “The team from Hewlett Packard and Columbia University addressed a complex and challenging revenue management problem encountered by many firms: choosing the products and prices to offer in a portfolio of choices to multiple markets. Their solution combines business process insights with technical advances, resulting in a state-of-the-art comprehensive system. The new system should provide implementation flexibility as it enables both strategic and tactical issues to be addressed, ultimately leading to increases in profitability."

For the HP Labs team, working on these kinds of complex problems is nothing new: the team includes members working on HP Labs’ Resource Management and Optimization and Integrated Supply-Demand Management research projects, where they perform high-quality analytics on structured and unstructured data to address enterprise challenges such as product portfolio complexity, dynamic and uncertain supply and demand, and the influence of human behavior and judgment. And that work clearly can’t take place in a vacuum, which is why partnering with HP’s businesses and with partners from the wider innovation ecosystem is so critical to the success of their projects.

“This award is an important recognition of HP’s leading edge research capabilities in advanced analytics and its applications to address business needs. This is all the more important because this innovative work is among the very few in the Revenue Management and Pricing domain applied to technology products with short life cycle,” explains Shailendra Jain, Distinguished Technologist and research manager, HP Labs. “This teams’ work combines the innovations driven by multiple disciplines including, large scale optimization, advanced statistics, economics and excellent business insights/knowledge,” he adds.  “To achieve this, the HP Labs team established the partnership with Columbia University to address the research challenges and the team from HP’s Printing and Personal Systems group in Asia-Pacific guided the requirements in the context of our notebook business and provided critical sponsorship.” The team from HP Labs is currently continuing this research work and its applications development for HP’s PC business.

Congratulations to the entire team: José Beltrán, Kay-Yut Chen, Aldo Garcia, Shailendra Jain, Enis Kayis, Alejandra Salazar, Jay Wang, Ruxian Wang from HP Labs; Guillermo Gallego from Columbia University); Matthew Wagner, Tillmann Fein and Trishala Raj Shankar HP Printing and Personal Systems.
