As a researcher at HP Laboratories for the past fifteen years working at the crossroads of Information Technology, energy and sustainability, I often take for granted my interest in subject matters that drive my research. I rarely wonder about the origins of that interest, whether I’m drawn to a subject out of a business need, for example, or whether I have some innate need to pursue an idea. However, I recently began thinking about the origins of my current interest in sustainability research and, like many things that drive us into and through adulthood, I realized that it began in childhood.
