20th Century Fox delivers IT at the pace of business with converged cloud

“Tomorrow the sun would rise. Who knows what the tide could bring,” was the ending quote from actor Tom Hanks in a video shown before the 20th Century Fox (Fox) keynote by Exec VP and CIO, John Herbert at HP Discover in Barcelona. Herbert also oversees the Shared Service Group, which provides infrastructure shared services and corporate application support for multiple business units. Fox’s business has undergone a transformation – from physical to digital distribution, film to digital cinema, tape delivery to digital file delivery. This has driven Fox’s IT environment to go through a transformation of its own – to deliver at the pace of business. Let’s see how:

To integrate the business of IT and combat its consumerization in a cost-competitive manner, Herbert focused on the very foundation of this cost structure – the data center – which drove Fox’s journey to the converged cloud.

Herbert walked the attendees through the Strategy, Execution and Measurement phases of “Journey Management” in action – after introducing the term at HP Discover Las Vegas.

Strategy: 3 drivers

Herbert explains that Speed to Market, the Digital Transformation Journey and Business Alignment were the three key drivers for the Converged Cloud strategy.

Execution: 3 Steps

Here’s what Fox did to execute this strategy:

1. Simplify the infrastructure.“Lack of standards is not conducive to cloud consumption,” asserts Herbert. This step involved the standardization of the infrastructure, with a systematic approach to integrating servers, storage and networking across an adaptive pool of services offered as a service.

2. Converge to the Cloud. Fox quickly learned the limitations of a public, cloud–only delivery model and realized that a hybrid approach was vital. The converged cloud is being built around a suite of tools that will provide a common management platform for the private, managed and public clouds.

3. Partner with HP. “HP knows the scale and complexity. HP is the right choice,” Herbert said. After all, we are talking about the George Clooney of Applications Transformation who has the complete package.

Measurement: 3 Metrics

Fox’s execution upon its strategy has realized tangible returns.

1. A 5-week timeframe to bring equipment in has now been reduced to 15 minutes

2. A 70 percent reduction in data center footprint.

3. A 45 percent reduction in operation expenses.

Role of IT: 3 changes

The converged cloud strategy has enabled Fox IT to not only transform the operations but also its role:

1. Getting a seat at the table to help guide the business

2. Evolving from an order-taker to a Service Broker

3. Transforming from an allocation, or year-end tax, to a quick, efficient service with a pay-as-you-go business option

With this transformation in its role, Fox’s response to changing tides in the future can be summarized in three words: "Bring it on!"

I can almost imagine Herbert paraphrasing Hanks, “Tomorrow the sun would rise in the converged cloud. 20th Century Fox is ready, no matter what the tide brings in the 21st Century.”

I've had similar experiences with converged cloud... well done with your implementation.

I would definitely recomend to others
