Barcelona to make Big Data matter at HP Discover 2013

Remember my thoughts about the role of Big Data in Las Vegas? I cannot but help wonder about its role in Barcelona. Simply going by the abstracts – I can tell for sure that Big Data is going to make its presence felt! Here is why.

The abstracts can be categorized to highlight various Big Data aspects:

1. Governance. Where do we start? How about reading up on Data Governance - a fundamental aspect of IT? Discover Theatre session DT2711 (Information Governance) will show how HP Information Governance solutions can help enterprises solve complex challenges, and properly define information management requirements, along with flexible approaches to addressing their business and IT goals.

2. Infrastructure. The New Style of IT introduces new technologies that will need new infrastructure. Session DT2717 highlights the transformation required to house these technologies for intelligent datacenters of the future. The HP AppSystem for SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse, a scalable, high-performance appliance, will be showcased in DT2118, which calls out the tools available for installation, operations, maintenance and ongoing support of this appliance.

3. Security. It would seem like there is a quid pro quo between Big Data and Security. There are sessions on techniques to protect Big Data as well as the application of complex analytics on the very data being protected to proactively combat adversaries.

4. Solutions. HP Discover in Barcelona will highlight a wide variety of products and solutions that enable enterprises to process Big Data right. TK2093 showcases HAVEn in action. Various aspects of Vertica are shared across DT1875, DF1885 and BB1887, in addition to showing what is new in TB1873. BB2129 discusses how HP addresses the migration to the SAP HANA in-memory database platform.  TB1320 introduces you to the HP IDOL Autonomy platform. In the DT2033 session, Jaap Suermondt, VP Analytics, HP Labs (who presented navigating the Big Data Traffic Jam at HP Discover Las Vegas 2013) will share information about an HP Labs open-source project that expands Hadoop to meet the needs of operational SQL-on-Hadoop workloads. DT2036 provides will share emerging trends and the HP Labs vision for future analytics systems, technologies and infrastructure.

5. Usage Scenarios. Finally, check out how these technologies have been used internally within HP (TB1892, 1893), externally by customers (DT2094, DT3380) and partners (IT3260,IT3377).

As Big Data continues to evolve, the landscape of its influencers has also changed since the Las Vegas conference – some of them moving up a tad from #50 to #10 for example.

How about you? What are the aspects of Big Data that matter to you? Which of these sessions are you planning on attending? Please let me know.
