Big Data is nothing unless it can support analytics

“Big Data is nothing unless it can support Analytics,” asserts the abstract for the Impact of Big Data Enterprises keynote at The Open Group Conference in Philadelphia. Michael Cavaretta, Technical Lead, Predictive Analytics / Data Mining, Research and Advanced Engineering, Ford Motor Company will be delivering this keynote, which highlights technologies and examples of companies using data and analytics from various perspectives. I find the abstract extremely interesting and look forward to this session. Here’s why:

 

Cavaretta is a Data Science Leader. This is a vital role with a unique skillset which transforms intelligence — residing within brontobytes of data — into actionable insight. Harvard Business School visiting professor Tom Davenport would agree. In this video interview by CIO Publisher Emeritus Gary Beach, Davenport states that Data Scientists have the sexiest job of the 21st Century in the world of Big Data.

So, what would it take for enterprises to ensure that their “Big Data” can support Analytics?  As the abstract states:

 

1. Tools and Technologies. To process Big Data, we need tools that can perform complex, real-time analytics on large volumes of data, as well as tools that can glean the underlying sentiment from the messages exchanged in multiple social media channels. Integrated solutions that bring these technologies together have also emerged, such as HAVEn from HP.

 

2. Skills. Enterprises have to make the required investments to revitalize the skillsets of their employees in alignment with the changing paradigms that drive Enterprise IT in the market. This will ensure that enterprises can realize their Return on Individuals. Paradigms like the Cloud have impacted job descriptions across the lifecycle. Similarly, Big Data has done its part by surfacing a vital need for Data Scientists who represent a whole new skillsets and experiences.

 

3. Strategic Vision. Information Management was perceived to be one of the key drivers of CIO priorities in 2013. In this HP newsletter titled “Collaborate to maximize business value from strategic information, featuring Gartner research,” a key recommendation made for CIOs is to team up with innovation leaders in the business to create a strategy for innovating with information or around new information types. CIOs, after all, are Chief Officers for Information. Enterprises must have a strategic vision for their most valuable asset – information – as asserted by Gartner VP, Doug Laney.
