What it takes to make Big Data matter

The term “Big Data” has generated “big traffic” just by its usage across social media channels. Discussions around this term contribute directly to the very phenomenon that it represents. It even has a conference dedicated to serve its needs — the HP Vertica Big Data Conference! But, what does it really take to make Big Data matter? As mentioned in the abstract for the keynote session “Make Data Matter with HAVEn – HP’s Big Data Platform” … “it takes the right hardware, software, services, infrastructure, and business transformation consulting to make Big Data Matter.” Let’s see how.

I look forward to the thoughts shared in this session by its impressive line of speakers:

 

I discuss these dimensions below and also add one of my own:

 

1. Hardware. In my own explanation of HAVEn, I choose 'H' for Hardware, providing the optimized infrastructure, consuming up to 89 percent less energy and 94 percent less space. Exponential growth of data does not necessarily give hardware the license to take up increased space. Instead, it should trigger innovative solutions that process and store more with less.

 

2. Software. Big Data is much different from managing simple rows and columns in worksheets or databases. It is about applying complex analysis to brontobytes of unstructured data paired up with unfathomable volumes of structured data. Dana Gardner would agree as he explains the powerful, differentiating features of HP Vertica Analytics Platform with its column-based approach in his interview of Infinity Insurance Companies.

 

3. Services. The New Style of IT requires the revitalization of the skillsets within the enterprise to address new paradigms. Michael Cavaretta, Data Science Leader at Ford Motor Company knows as he explained at the Open Group Conference in Philadelphia: “Big Data means nothing without analytics.” I would extend this assertion to “Big Data means nothing without analytics done right by Data Scientists.” Enterprises must make sure that they grow such skillsets and/or provision such services from trusted partners.

 

4. Infrastructure. Predictive analytics drives systemic automation across the collection, analysis and presentation lay.... Such automation must be enabled by the right compute, network and storage infrastructure in the right mix of converged cloud environments.

 

5. Business Transformation Consulting. CIOs must have long-term information outlook on the kinds, types and qualities of information that w.... Enterprises must define their roadmap from the current and desired state of information. When embarking on this journey, it would serve them best to have a Transformation GPS.

 

Those are my thoughts on the various dimensions that have been called out in this abstract.

 

There is another dimension that is vital to realizing tangible value from Big Data — governance. Data Governance is more important than ever given the multi-faceted data sources with ubiquitous access across the ecosystems of engagement. Having the right strategy and enabling technologies is good. Sustained execution of this strategy with the right levels of governance? Priceless!
