20th Century Fox delivers IT at the pace of business with converged cloud

“Tomorrow the sun would rise. Who knows what the tide could bring,” was the ending quote from actor Tom Hanks in a video shown before the 20th Century Fox (Fox) keynote by Exec VP and CIO, John Herbert at HP Discover in Barcelona. Herbert also oversees the Shared Service Group, which provides infrastructure shared services and corporate application support for multiple business units. Fox’s business has undergone a transformation – from physical to digital distribution, film to digital cinema, tape delivery to digital file delivery. This has driven Fox’s IT environment to go through a transformation of its own – to deliver at the pace of business. Let’s see how:

It takes all types of data to discover the gold mine in your enterprise

“Is your Big Data a gold mine or garbage dump,” asks Brian Weiss, VP, HP Autonomy in his Big Data session at HP Discover. Weiss explains that enterprises need to be able to look at all types of data with context to glean actionable, meaningful insight – even for a simple phone call. You can capture different data elements about the phone call like the date, time, duration etc. But what was the prevailing mindset during the conversation? Was the caller (think customer) angry? How about having a solution to look at both the structured metadata about the phone call as well as the unstructured sentiment. Voila: HPExploreCloud - A solution that can discover the gold mine in your enterprise.

Are you ready to be amazed by Intel at HP Discover Barcelona?

Are you ready to be amazed by what HP and Intel have in store for you this year? This is the question posed in this post, in which Intel invites HP Discover attendees to “Experience some of the platform and technology advancements that will become essential to the way we work, the way we live, and to our social interaction.” This post piqued my curiosity and made me wonder what could be so “amazing” about the Intel sessions at this conference. Here are my thoughts based on a quick review.

I cannot even begin to imagine the ROI from HP Discover

By now, I have discussed multiple dimensions of ROI in addition to its original expansion — Return on Investment. HP Discover 2012 in Frankfurt triggered my thoughts on the Return on Information. 3D Mobile Technology from HP Labs introduced me to Return on Innovation. Bringing my son back home from college triggered the Return on Individuals. Moonshot technology contributed to the Return on Infrastructure. And I thought I had seen it all. Until I saw the abstract on the IT3351 session at HP Discover in Barcelona. Had it not been for this abstract, I could not have even begun to imagine the thoughts shared below.

New Style of IT drives 300 blog posts with 500 followers

Two years into blogging, I look back to my 1st, 100th and 200th post with great interest. As I review posts 200 – 300, published in the last six months, I see they align very well with the New Style of IT characterized by HP CEO Meg Whitman in her keynote at HP Discover 2013 in Las Vegas. Coincidentally, I reached another milestone at the same time — 500 followers — who have made it an enlightening experience with their comments, coffee talk, tweet jams, twitter chats and web jams.
