5 Words that describe IT Culture for the Next Generation CIO

There was a CIOChat held recently on 5 words that best describe IT culture.  There were many phrases and combination of words that brought out various aspects of enterprise culture in general as well as the culture of Enterprise IT in particular.  “Culture is really important … You also need to develop a culture that is open to change”, says HP EVP of Technology and Operations John Hinshaw in this interview by Peter High on Forbes as part of the Beyond CIO series that highlights CIOs taking on roles with expanded purviews.  Hinshaw describes his experience growing from a CIO in the years past to his current role where the CIO and IT report to him, as do several other business units.  After reflecting on what was shared by my peers in the CIOchat, and reading Hinshaw’s interview in Forbes, here is my take on 5 words that best describe IT culture.

Making New Style of IT real at Gartner Symposium

Ramón Baez, SVP and CIO of HP is speaking at the Gartner Symposium 2014 on the New Style of IT – a style that promises simplicity, greater agility, higher performance and lower costs. As the CIO of a global enterprise with five major business lines and more than 300,000 employees working in 170 countries, Baez deals with a formidable challenge.  Curious about how Baez could be addressing these challenges, I gathered some valuable pointers from the other HP sessions.  Join me as I checkout how the New Style of IT is made real at the Gartner symposium.

The Valentines of Enterprise IT

Come Valentine’s Day, I will get ready to make my candle-lit dinner reservations (with the bottle of champagne in the ice-bucket and a bouquet of fresh roses for my spouse), I eagerly look forward to a quiet evening with her, and am thankful for how she completes me in achieving our goals – as a couple – as partners. Just like us, there are many such “Valentine Pairs” who may very well set aside precious moments to recognize this vital relationship on February 14. Such mutually dependent partnerships are not unique to our personal lives. Competitive enterprises of the future must ensure that similar partnerships are in place to make it all relevant. Here’s wishing these New Style of Partnerships a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

Inauguration of the New CIO

Presidential inaugurations herald the dawn a new term, filled with aspirations of many, including the ambitious goals of the Commander-in-Chief. The inaugural address charts a course for the next four years. As I watched the inaugural ceremonies, I thought of newly appointed CIOs who must be ready to deliver their own version of an inaugural address. Every new CIO must lay out their priorities, based on the business and IT drivers for their enterprise.
