Discover the company that founded Silicon Valley 75 years ago—HP

HPgarage.pngThe video at the first HP Discover General Session started with black-and-white photos of two gentlemen in The Garage, the voiceover calling out an engineering company that was founded in 1939. Their first customer was Walt Disney, who bought eight oscillators to enhance the audio quality of the animated film Fantasia in 1940. Two students from Stanford University founded this company and decided on its name with a coin toss. “Had it been tails, this would have been 75 years of PH instead of HP,” quipped HP CEO Meg Whitman as she took center stage at HP Discover. She then went on to highlight the track record of innovation the world has seen from this company that all started in The Garage. Click here for a walk down memory lane. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard used all of the $538 of working capital to found the Silicon Valley we know today, Whitman said. She continued to call out various HP milestones during 75 years of thinking, imagining, inventing and creating.

Leading with innovation to drive the New Style of IT at HP Discover

I recently read an article about Van Phillips who asked a seemingly simple question, "What if we use a C-shape?" to forever change the way prosthetics are built. The article refers to Warren Berger's book A More Beautiful Question. In the book, Berger describes “The Power of inquiry to spark breakthrough ideas,” reasoning that a cycle of Why / What if / How can guide us through the process of innovative questioning. This new style of questioning is a must for the leading innovation required by the New Style of IT.
