Downtime – One of the Surest Ways to Lose a Customer for Life

Imagine you live in San Jose, Ca. You’ve booked a flight to southern California to attend your engagement party being hosted by your parents. All your family will be there; it’s a once in a lifetime event. When you arrive at the airport for check in on Friday night, the agents at the counters are flustered and fellow travelers are noticeably upset. The computers are down and have been down for 30 minutes.  Within the hour you find out that as a result of the outage the airline is cancelling all departing flights until further notice. You can’t believe it, is this really happening? What are you going to do? How will you make it home? These are the questions that rushed through my head when the carrier I was scheduled to use grounded my departing flight (and hundreds of others) due to a computer glitch on June 21. I used to consider myself a loyal customer, but as my fiancé and I opted to hop in our car in the wee hours of the morning to complete the just cancelled trip, I can’t say that I am anymore.

It’s not a surprise that system downtime is bad for business. As we all know, customers are difficult to win but as an increasingly demanding group, they are very easy to lose.  And in a competitive environment where compute uptime is critical to survive, downtime is something you want to avoid.

HP offers a solution that can help companies avert such a disaster—Serviceguard for Linux. A high availability and disaster recovery solution that allows your business to maintain nearly continuous operations, and radically reduce the cost associated with downtime. In our latest update, we introduced many new capabilities and enhancements that further fortify Linux to extend the full mission-critical experience to x86 environments:

  • Serviceguard Toolkit for SAP Sybase ASE and SAP Sybase Replication Server for Linux - Provide easy integration and near continuous DB access of Sybase ASE and Replication Server applications.
  • HP Serviceguard Toolkit for Enterprise DB PPAS for Linux - Deliver high availability and built-in monitoring capabilities for the EnterpriseDB Postgres Plus Advanced Server (PPAS).
  • Cluster verification - Identify and fix configuration issues quickly before they cause downtime.
  • Virtualization Support -  Provide high availability for applications running inside a virtual machine.
  • Greater choice of storage - Supporting HP StoreVirtual 4000, HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200, and HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 to protect your existing storage investments.

Downtime is avoidable as long as you’re prepared. Don’t let it be the reason you lose a customer for life. To learn more about how you can protect your x86/Linux environment, visit HP Serviceguard Solutions for Linux.
