Best practices, tips, tools – if timely can be worth their weight in gold. While I am fortunate to work with many experts and often have the opportunity to gain insight into the inner workings of UNIX environments, it can take work to uncover the nuggets worth sharing. This week, Eric Martorell, HP BCS EMEA Sales Director, shared best practices he has learned over the years from working with many customers as well as colleagues from the SAP Competence Center, in particular Thomas Wagenblast. This information is relevant to everyone working in UNIX environments and addresses the top 10 reasons to run your SAP application layer in a HP-UX environment.
1. Greater release stability, less patches and seldom any retroactive patching.
You can run HP-UX 11i v3 quasi unchanged for years. Frequent releases with the latest patch levels are often a trademark of other operating environments.
2. Smaller maintenance timeframes
Patches are less frequent and often transparent with Integrity Superdome 2 running HP-UX environments. No need for multiple, long maintenance windows and heavy lifting to update the operating environment often found with other solutions.
3. Binary compatibility is in the genes
Customize (ie with production interfaces) the application as you need. Your binaries are protected on HP-UX 11i v3, at least until 2022. Even HP 9000 PA-RISC environments move to Integrity with unchanged custom binaries.
4. Qualify only once
When HP-UX is used for both the database and application layer, you only have to qualify one OS, one bit stream.
5. Single point of contact for support plus covers the end –to-end stack
With SAP in a HP-UX environment, you get advanced OS Support. This can include complete control and response from development labs on specific situations. HP is responsible for the SAP source code adaptation. Other environments, you will talk to multiple support teams from many vendors.
6. No need to update firmware frequently
With HP-UX, firmware updates are not weekly or monthly as is often the case with other environments
7. Security you can depend on
HP-UX includes comprehensive security built in. There is no known HP-UX virus.
8. Application stacking helps avoid overhead, costs, and maintenance
Application stacking on HP-UX is common, no need for virtual machines and associated overhead, costs and maintenance often needed in other environments.
9. Better server utilization and rock bottom latency
HP-UX Resource Management delivers better server utilization without overhead, with rock bottom latency assuring business needs alignment. For example, with HP-UX you can consolidate SAP components in one server, isolate them with PRM or Containers, and reassign resources among them dynamically as soon as business demand changes. This can be done manually or automatically with gWLM/iCAP.
10. Greatly reduced Test and Development needs
Test and Dev environments will most likely be in a HP-UX virtualized environment. This helps with resource optimization.
With HP-UX, running virtualization is a mature, straightforward best practice inserted into both the customer and the ISV governance model. For example in case of a problem, you get full support on your environment as is. Other environments may require logging a support call. This usually means recreating the problem without enabling virtualization as most ISVs will refuse to consider the virtualization stack as part of the base environment to be fixed.
