HP 1100 printing a @ for no reason

We have this strange problem which occurs now and again, when someone is working on their machine it can happen at any time, the printer will start to warm up and prints a page with a @ on the top left hand side. It occurs every so often and i can figure out whats causing it! the user is not printing at the time (or hasnt printed) or attempting to print. It occurs maybe every so often (not every day, perhaps once a week or once a month, then disappear again for a few months then it happens again!)

this happens to a number of users with this printer, and they are connecting to it via lpt1 (parallel cable) runnin a number of OS's mainly win98 or w2k.

The only thing thats common between all these machines is that they are all compaq machines!

i have yet to check to see what way the bios is setup for the printer (ie bi-directional, output only, ecp, epp)

Has anyone else seen this problem before? or know how to fix it?

Re: HP 1100 printing a @ for no reason

Hello Nick,

This is likely a communications hick-up. Make sure that the cable being used is IEEE 1284 compliant and that there are no other devices between the computer and printer (switch box, zip drive etc.). In addition to that you can try the suggestions in the document link below:
