Achieving mobile workforce empowerment through a simple affordable VDI

It is truly an understatement when I state workforces are becoming increasingly mobile.  We know it from our own experience – most of us use a combination of laptops, tablets, and mobile phones every day to get our work done.  According to Forrester Research, Inc. 65% of information workers work from multiple locations and over 200 million bring their own devices.  Over 77% of businesses believe that increasing diversity of end user smartphones and tablets, and the apps on them will have a major impact on their spending in 2012.   Because of this, over 60% will implement a Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) policy for employees to bring their own laptops, tablets and/or devices.

SMBs, much like their larger counterparts, are faced with a dilemma - how can they support this growing mobility trend and give users the flexibility they crave without access to the support of an IT shop for this device proliferation?  And, how do they deliver secure access to corporate applications and data without sacrificing the end-user experience?

This has led to increased urgency and interest around desktop virtualization aka VDI. By decoupling the corporate desktops, applications and data from the end point devices using virtualization, IT can now deliver anytime, anywhere, any device access without having to manage each endpoint device.  And, by centralizing and consolidating the desktops and data, IT streamlines management while greatly improving security.

SMBs want to deploy VDI for these reasons, but need to do so within tight budgets and limited resources.  The newly updated reference architecture from HP and Citrix offers a simple and affordable solution for SMBs to deploy virtual desktops for less than the cost of traditional PCs while ensuring end-users get a personalized rich experience. To scale, you simply snap together these appliances like children’s’ building blocks, and VDI-in-a-Box automatically load balances and manages high-availability across this grid.

The HP Client Virtualization SMB Reference Architecture for Citrix VDI-in-a-Box is an appliance-like configuration that removes the guesswork from deploying a virtualized desktop solution. Citrix VDI-in-a-Box now includes Citrix Personal vDisk, a built-in personalization technology, which allows users to self-select their applications, while IT retains the efficiencies of managing a single master image.

This solution eliminates over 60% of typical VDI costs and enables you to deploy personalized virtual desktops within current PC budgets.   Look for a HP-Citrix SMB solution brief and technical whitepaper (reference architecture) – coming in early December.  For a look at HP’s complete client virtualization reference architectures, visit .
