Add intelligence and compute, while reducing energy
Guest blog written by Mike Kendall, Group Manager, Options and Intelligent Infrastructure Marketing, ISS
So who of you are NOT planning to increase the amount of compute and storage capacity to your data center over the next year or so? No one? I thought so.
Well as the number, complexity and required performance of applications increase I bet you’re all finding that the space, power and cooling capacity required to host the additional systems is at a premium.
I have some good news for you. As part of the just announced HP ProActive Insight architecture, HP has developed intelligent and more efficient server and infrastructure technologies that reduce the power needed to operate and cool our latest HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. These technologies reclaim limited space, power and cooling resources for needed workloads, while also reducing error prone manual checking and documenting of power and rack configurations. The combination of better performance and lower energy requirements means that ProLiant Gen8 servers can provide up to 1.7 times the compute capability per watt as the previous generation server. How’s that for some needed help.
So how do we perform such feats? We’ve added smarts to the servers and even the rack and power infrastructure elements. We call these ‘Discovery Services’, and they fall into the categories of Thermal, Location, and Power. Read on for more.
Thermal Discovery Services: Getting the most workload capacity out of IT equipment is a top priority for organizations, like yours. This means trying to add compute capacity within constrained power and cooling capacity while keeping a lid on operating costs.
How? First we have added a 3D element to our Sea of Sensors technology for even more efficient fan cooling within the server. Second, we have high efficiency Platinum Plus power supplies standard in many of our newest servers. Third, our HP SmartMemory technology provides better performance at lower power than the industry standard. Even our new Intelligent Series rack has gotten into the act with better airflow efficiency. More performance for less power.
Location Discovery Services: What if you could eliminate the need to manually inventory the systems in your data center? What if your servers had the ability to identify and inventory themselves? Not only would you save time and money, you could match server workload to the available power, cooling and space resources efficiently, deploy workloads and increase workload performance.
Turns out we can do that. With intelligence added to the new Intelligent Series rack and our new ProLiant Gen8 servers, the server can query the rack to learn its U location and the rack id. Then record and display it all in Insight Control.
Power Discovery Services: Now let’s eliminate power configuration errors, precisely track power usage by rack and server by server, all while eliminating manual record keeping. The HP Intelligent PDU (iPDU) does all this and more for you, easily, automatically and accurately. It pairs redundant outlets on different iPDUs and sends this information to HP Insight Control with only a few clicks so that you can know that systems are powered correctly and redundantly. Also, it helps to enforce maximum power load limits on circuits removing the threat of breaker overloading, a source of unplanned system downtime.
So hurry on over and find out more about HP ProActive Insight architecture and how to get more compute for less power and space.
