Reality Check: Server Insights

Two firsts, two world records: HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 servers performance tradition continues.

Best single-system, non-clustered x86 performance – ever.

Seems like a bold statement—right?  Well we have the facts to back it up. The new HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server took the #1 spot beating both Oracle and Cisco for the non-clustered TPC-H benchmark on both performance and price. The TPC Benchmark™H (TPC-H) is a decision support benchmark consisting of a suite of business oriented ad-hoc queries and concurrent data modifications. In today’s data-driven world, large volumes of data from multiple sources must be analyzed. This translates to exponential growth in the number of queries executed by a large number of users. The TPC-H benchmark illustrates decision support systems that examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions. This is especially advantageous in banking, stock-trading and the telecom applications where the ability to quickly analyze data means more revenue and a competitive advantage to the business. The DL580 Gen8 is the leading server for processing the most complex queries on the largest amount of data by the most users at the lowest cost.

The server achievements include:

  • 461,837 QphH @ 3,000GB at an excellent price/performance of $2.04/QphH @ 3,000GB, defeating Oracle by 12.7% greater performance at almost HALF the cost and Cisco by more than 2X greater performance.
  • For the 10,000GB scale factor, the ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server achieved 404,005QphH @ 10,000GB and an industry-leading price/performance of $2.34/QphH @ 10,000GB, defeating Oracle by 6.9% greater performance at HALF the cost.
  • With this benchmark, customers are assured the ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server is easily the choice for decision-support systems for Big Data and real-time analytics.

New ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server centers on performance

Performance is a primary focus of the ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server. With this platform, the ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server defeated all non-clustered competitors for performance in the 3,000GB and 10,000GB scale factors, and is one of the first servers to run Microsoft SQL 2014 on the TPC-H benchmark.

Key take aways

  • Ground-breaking performance with #1 overall non-clustered performance and price/performance result on the TPC-H benchmark @ 10,000GB scale factor
  • #1 overall non-clustered performance on the TPC-H benchmark @ 3,000GB scale factor
  • One of the FIRST vendors to use Microsoft SQL Server 2014 in a TPC-H benchmark
  • Achieved 2x greater performance than Cisco at half the cost in the 3,000GB scale factor
  • Beats Oracle 4P server performance results at almost half the cost in the 10,000GB scale factor
