Used Cars and Open Source/Linux

Have you ever bought a used car?  If so, do you ever get the feeling that either the used car salesman or individual you are buying the used car from is hiding something? Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply plug something into a used car to find out what is wrong with it before you made the decision to buy?

It is easy to see that what is wrong with the used car business – a lack of honesty and transparency.

Now compare this to open source software and Linux.  The code is freely available – completely transparent – and the community works together openly and honestly to enhance the code.  Additionally, the opportunities to change and customize the code are limitless.  Sounds ideal, but times are changing.

We are witnessing massive consolidation in the technology industry.  What was once open is slowly turning into privatized, proprietary products and services destined to be controlled and not free.  The time is coming when the source code is hidden and the ability to develop on it will be controlled by those that own the platform or flow of information.

With the proliferation of platforms and services, we must always keep in mind the vital role open source software and Linux plays in innovation and value creation.  We must always fight to keep open source and Linux alive.  Let us not allow control of the many to be placed in the hands of the few who seek to profit from our ignorance.

HP is a champion of Linux and open source software.  HP’s ProLiant servers, StorageWorks storage, Networking products, and Technology Services are all about creating exceptional value for every dollar spent.  From a server perspective ProLiant servers provide:

  1. Reliable, serviceable, and manageable industry standard servers delivering higher performance and efficiency
  2. Consistent industry standard innovations in management, power and cooling, connectivity, performance, and design
  3. A comprehensive server portfolio that uniquely adapts to and fits the need of all customers
  4. Value-rich storage, networking, service and support products that simplify building, managing and maintaining your infrastructure
  5. Close collaboration with Linux partners ensuring the server, OS, and layered applications perform their best

I invite you to learn more about how HP’s Instant-On enterprise delivers true value that preserves the independence of the open source software and Linux community.

With regards to "plugging in something into a used car and seeing what's wrong with it", I've seen an ad on tv about an OBD-II scanner geared for consumers. You just plug it into the car's diagnostic port and it gives you all the error codes along with the error in plain text

If Linux will become closed source, or a software won't be anymore Open Source, then there will be someone that will try to make an Open Source alternative, be sure of that. But the major problem with Open Source, I say, that is the hardware drivers development, witch many hardware companies aren't very responsive to Linux, this is the only major problem that I can find in Linux/Open Source (I know that before buying a hardware it's recomended to see if it's compatible with Linux).

Thanks for your comments - I really appreciate it.  Working on support for Linux is my chief concern and believe me it isn't easy with all the Linux variants and ProLiant models both past and present.  I'll share in a future blog my concern and see if you all can provide some suggestions.  As you can expect in a publicly traded company every dollar we spend is watched like a hawk.

Look at the papers, registration document and warranty. Check whether the quoted price suits your purchase. Thus keep an experienced driver with you while buying a second hand outfit.

Sometimes, I think that linux shoots itself in the foot. I have difficulty getting my C-media 8738 card to work--support has been screwed up in order to facilitate OS install, As I understand it, one needs special terminal commands to enable--the info very ambiguous, generalized, and fuzzy. In the past, these cards always were turnkey--that's why I purchased them in the first place. One has to keep up with the OS, though--support for older versions vanishes, of course--leaving one vulnerable. Certainly, ATi and nVidia take the same philosophy as they do in windows--support for older video cards (and other items) vanishes, leaving one with the confounding open source drivers.

As for the 04/22/22 blass points, I wish that linux support, at their discretion and over time, would separate and archive "crusty" old items which proved compatible/incompatible years ago--items which lack relevance and no longer are available for purchase. (I'm not saying that new info concerning such items, upon which many of us depend mightily, shouldn't be inserted later on into such archives.) When looking for compatible items and helpful info, always I'm met with "vintage" (legacy) info--I have to "hack through" this to get to items and info which still prove useful. Too many items (and forum/bug threads, etc.) from, say, 2004, lack relevance today--often, this merely confuses recent issues. Of course, search engines dutifully pop this stuff up, still.

Also, many items are compatible anyway (or prove compatible later--given valiant driver effort), even though relevant sites don't mention them. Maddeningly, intelligent "intuition" and trial and error too often still prove necessary. Compatiblility sites really aren't the panacea we would prefer and robotically point to for guidance....

In short, information often is overly sketchy, dated, and ambiguous.

Wonderful and clear information about the Used casrs and open source linux. Open source software thrives because it's easily transportable ... When hardware comes into the picture, you suddenly have to contend with fabrication, distribution, packaging, etc. And at every step of the way you will be dealing with people who won't see it as a 'community project' but as a paycheck for something they are physically building or distributing. Thanks for sharing the information about the HP's proliant servers.

It’s good to relate buying used cars with the open source software as both are linked with the personals moral behavior as not to proliferate or show any kind of dishonesty while selling it to others if are dealing with cars.

We are considering blog posts and articles discussing the reliability of used cars to be consider as a great investment nowadays.

Cars are already seeing linux pop up in them, several new gps devices have forms of embeded linux. For example look as the new Dash Express, the device is Web 2.0 capable, communicates with other devices and will tell you where the traffic is and help route you around it.

The majority of the American population has very little, or no understanding of the used car trade. A simple understanding on when and where to sell, how to get your car ready, writing a classified ad, negotiating, and making a contract. With consumer demand rising and supply constrained by several factors, including the tendency of new-car owners to hang on to them longer, prices for used vehicles have been climbing steadily. According to one recent study, nearly three times as many shoppers now want to buy a used, rather than a new, vehicle.

A second hand car or a used car can be a great way to save money on a car purchase. When cars are brand new, most lose significant value as soon as it is purchased.

I think one should use the technology wherever possible. If it is helping people to take a proper decisions then why not use it?. Yes, buying an used cars is a difficult job. you need to take much valuable decisions while buying an used car. and if open source software helping you in making such decisions, then from my point of view its a great step towards using technology at its high. Used cars are getting much more demands, and this will help more and more peoples. I congratulate all the people associate with this project.
