What do sports and virtualization benchmarking have in common?

What is it about a sports underdog that we all tend to like so much?  Is it watching them persevere and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds?  Or is it their relentless passion and drive to win?  Whatever it is, when we witness the success of an underdog we cannot help cheering them on, unless of course it’s your team that was defeated by the underdog.

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is the underdog of the virtualization market and with the passion and drive of an underdog they are achieving amazing results.  Working together, HP and Red Hat have achieved the #1 overall SPECvirt_sc2010 result not once but twice.   The latest result beat up on the competition by delivering 27% more performance and 28% more tiles1.  Read the performance brief for more details.

And it even gets better!  Through close collaboration with Red Hat in internal tests HP and Red Hat exceeded the stated 2 TB memory support limit for both Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 and the ProLiant DL980 G7 to achieve 1,000 VMs running on an HP ProLiant DL980 G7 with 4 TB of memory.  With this unprecedented result HP and Red Hat produced the most virtual machines on a single server.   This result is not only a testament to the capabilities of Red Hat’s virtualization technologies but also to the power and scaling of the HP ProLiant DL980 G7 server with PREMA Architecture.  The case for server consolidation through virtualization has never been better.

OK, performance, check, but let’s talk about what really matters – how much does it cost?  Surprisingly a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization deployment on HP ProLiant and BladeSystem servers costs up to 60 to 80% less than other virtualization solutions while delivering consolidation ratios of more than 400 virtual machines with enterprise workloads running on a single server.  Now that is hard to beat!

No success story would be complete without customers.  Industry leading customers such as Duke Cancer Institute, Salsa, and others have all chosen HP ProLiant servers as their platform to deploy Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and the list continues to grow.

What does all this mean?  You can trust HP as a proven platform for delivering Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.
