HP achieves near real time sales reporting by utilizing HP AppSystems for SAP HANA

By Neal Streit – HP Global Supply Chain Systems

At HP, we bring together a portfolio that spans printing, personal computing, software, services, IT infrastructure and connectivity and have more than 300,000 employees worldwide.

To support our global business, our supply chain is mission critical, and one of the largest  in terms of dollars, breadth, product complexity and global reach.

We are on a continual journey to improve our supply chain management practices to benefit customers, suppliers, employees, the environment and HP's own bottom line, and one of the key areas of improvement recently involved the deployment of one of our own Converged Systems solutions to leverage the advantages of “Big Data”...

Namely, our HP AppSystems for SAP HANA.

Overall process improvement

HP AppSystems for SAP HANA allowed HP to replace a prior process that entailed taking daily snapshots of data in the afternoon and making reports available to managers the next morning. The reports included orders placed within a specific period; shipments to date; and backlogs, and provided details on allocations to orders.

This ineffective process required HP to run multiple manual queries from the business warehouse which in turn consumed two to three hours of processing data through Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to render it into a usable format. Now, the data and reports are automated and best of all they are available within minutes.

HP AppSystems for SAP HANA presented an ideal solution for eliminating information latency and supporting better-informed business decisions. HP’s Sales Managers as well as Supply Chain Managers and Planners now have access to real time or near real time data that enables improved decision making.

As part of the process of moving the data to the SAP HANA in-memory database, HP also moved the queries and reporting from Microsoft Excel to SAP Business Objects to enable rapid processing of queries and virtually eliminate manual processing.

Increased throughput

HP was able to run more queries and ad hoc queries per day, with query run times completed 11 times faster than the previous process. The SAP HANA implementation helps HP save time and avoid potential errors by eliminating the need to execute long-running queries overnight.  It also almost completely eliminated the time consuming task of manually collecting, consolidating and summarizing data and reports.

Data Storage Object (DSO) is a critical step in the process of transferring data from source systems to the business warehouse.  As a result, activation time was 54times faster than the previous process. Faster DSO activation makes data available more quickly, supports more-frequent loading of data, and more-frequent updates for availability closer to real time. It speeds the flow of data from source systems to downstream systems. HP accomplished all this without having to re-design the database. HP AppSystems for SAP HANA simplified deployment, delivered optimized intelligent storage and accelerated time to business value.

The combination of the SAP HANA migration and the use of SAP BusinessObjects technology created an HP solution giving HP business users fast, mobile access to near real-time supply chain analytics, formatted in dashboards to deliver actionable intelligence.
