When scanning black & white photos, if we crop to the photo in the preview window, it blows out the image (makes it FAR too light). If we don't crop it to the photo, it's closer to the original photo, but if we select too much white, we get a different level of grays.
Also, we cannot enlarge bitmap images using autocontrast without it turning the image solid black.
Can anyone help me with these problems?

Does this issue appears when you scan colored photo? If not, you may select another output type (gray scale for example) and try with this output type.
That you can do is to unplug usb and power module. lock/unlock the carriage key six times and replug usb and power module.
Make a scan and if thisis the same issue, try scan on another MAC with the same version and if this is the same issue and if you are in warranty, you may have to contact HP support for an exchange.
