True to this form, PIRA is providing leading-edge industry insight on Day 3 (January 27) of the conference. PIRA's Adam Page will provide an overview on "Market developments for security printing and alternative solutions", and Michael Chamberlain of PIRA will provide "Latest developments in banknote security".

The speaker list, as usual for a PIRA conference, is impressive and highly interdisciplinary. An excellent chance to catch up on all aspects of the industry -- from inks to IDs, from banknotes to biometrics, and from printing to passports--in a focused 2 1/2 day event.

There is a workshop on "Counterfeiting trends: Detection, prevention and communication" on the first day of the conference (afternoon of January 25). Nevenka Skavic and Jasna Galekovic will provide indepth information on:

  • Methods and techniques being used to counterfeit regional documents
  • Weaknesses in regional identification and travel documents
  • Technological innovations needed to ensure future security of these documents
  • Other methods being used to create high quality counterfeit international travel documents
  • Recent developments in achieving a globally interoperable Border Management System to ensure efficient detection of counterfeits
  • Improvements in infrastructure required to better communicate observed trends between countries

This sounds very promising--they are trying to describe the entire ecosystem in which security/national documents work, providing insight as to how to match the technologies to their use in the lifecycle of the security document.

Again, this occurs in Zagreb, Croatia on 25-27 January 2011. An ideal setting for Europeans, easy to get there from anywhere in Europe or Near East. For the rest, use this as a launch point to an Adriatic mid-Winter mini-break.
