Unlocking the promise of ProLiant with Software-Defined Storage

A couple of months ago when I talked about the new style of IT and the future of storage, I promised I’d talk about Software-Defined Storage some more. Boy have I got something to tell you about it today!

If you follow my posts here you’ll know that I’m a believer in converged infrastructure. Why? Because convergence comes up time and time again as I talk to customers. Things move fast in our world, and customers are keen to benefit from the disruptive advances in technology around us. At the Gartner Symposium last month, Gartner said Software-Defined Storage is the #2 in their Top 10 trends. I think it’s already well underway today.

Our Software-Defined Storage leadership edge

Everyone has plans around Software-Defined Storage, but where others are scrambling to build or acquire and integrate, by serendipity or strategy (likely a bit of both), we’ve been delivering Software-Defined Storage for more than six years with the LeftHand/P4000/StoreVirtual VSA. (We’ve been though a few branding exercises…)

The “others” like EMC announced orchestration software ViPR and then acquired a VSA ScaleIO earlier this year to complete a control/data plane Software-Defined-Confusion. VMware acquired Virsto VSA and announced vSAN, which is still months away from version 1.0. Although its product isn’t ready yet, VMware does get a lot of credit in getting folks to understand the value of Software-Defined Storage. In the past, we used to need to explain to people what our StoreVirtual VSA is, now people come up to ask us how it can solve their problems.

Now the big news: Unlock your server’s capacity with resilient shared storage

Converged infrastructure is all about bringing servers, storage and networking together intelligently though open, standards-based technology. Server virtualization and Software-Defined Storage are a prime example this, and that server administrators now “get” SDS is great. This is is why I am so excited about what we just announced: We’re now including 1TB StoreVirtual  VSA at no additional cost on  ProLiant Gen8 servers!

The StoreVirtual VSA transforms our ProLiant servers into a powerful, truly  out-of-the-box Converged Infrastructure solution. See what Kate Davis, our Worldwide Software-Defined Storage Marketing Manager, has to say about Delivering Software-Defined Storage to the masses—for free.

Sweet benefits with StoreVirtual VSA

If you’re a small or midsize business, or have remote and branch offices, this means you can benefit from deploying virtualized applications and resilient shared storage co-resident on the same server infrastructure without increasing costs or footprint. In the process, you eliminate the need to shell out for dedicated storage arrays. As you grow, you can upgrade non-disruptively to 4TB, 10TB, and 50TB capacity points. Sweet!

We have proven Software-Defined Storage products with HP StoreVirtual VSA and StoreOnce VSA that solve real-world customer issues today. Our HP 3PAR StoreServ platform gives customers a single, operational architecture for all workloads and is at the core of our converged storage strategy with a future ready architecture, Thin Technologies, Adaptive Optimization, Peer Motion and more. StoreVirtual VSA delivers cost-optimized but rich storage services on commodity servers with Thin Provisioning, Adaptive Optimization and Peer Motion. Note some common terms? Now imagine the possibilities. Excited? I certainly am.

We are way ahead of the industry with our StoreVirtual VSA, and have a great opportunity to extend our leadership in the area –and we have every intention of doing so!
