Spotting competitive advantage in mature markets

A look at recent tape market share numbers

While flying back from a customer visit last week, I reviewed new EMEA tape market share numbers from analysts IDC and SCCG. The positive results for HP prompted me to blog about the nature of maintaining or gaining market share in markets that have reached maturity.

Disruptive storage technologies such as flash and software-defined storage continue to dominate the headlines – as well as many of my blogs! But if the value of a solution is measured by ongoing market adoption and relevant use cases rather than just share of press and analyst coverage, then mature technologies such as tape retain their importance for today’s modern data centre.

Tape : the storage survivor. What’s next?

Sorry no EMEA travel stories to report this week L,  but I thought it would be interesting to explore the 60-year, hardy IT veteran that is tape…  I remember after EMC acquired Data Domain, a few years back, the sales mantra was ‘Tape is Dead!’, but it is interesting to see how 77% of enterprises continue to utilise this technology in some form. Tape clearly has a highly relevant role in the storage ecosystem family, like some wise paternal and continues to attract R&D dollars to advance the technology.  So what next?
