I’ve spent years exploring how to introduce students to “engineering”. It’s a tough sell, given the misconceptions and mythology that surrounds a complex field. It’s not always about being a Geek or a hallowed hall only for the best and brightest in math and science – and robotics is only one way to tickle the imagination of students.


At its core, great engineering design solves real human problems.


There are many ways new ways to get students excited about the “E” in STEM(+). Two new HP Catalyst Academy mini-courses are among them:


App Design: Help Your Students Change Their World


Apps for Good is a wonderful non-profit organization out of the UK that is working with middle school and high school (lower and upper secondary) students to introduce them to app design from a social entrepreneur lens. Interestingly, the primary focus is more on the “…for Good” element, from which follows the “App…” design. It’s not simply about coding.


Apps for Good is now expanding beyond the UK, and you can now learn how they introduce this methodology and curriculum by taking their self-paced mini-course!





Make/Hack/Play Together


This HP Catalyst Academy mini-course introduces teachers to the “maker movement”, in forms that are both “digital” and “analog”. It’s all about student-driven tinkering. If you’d like to immerse your students in creative problem solving and actually “building stuff” (a lost art for some students glued to their digital media), then this course from Peer2Peer University will get you started.






In just a few weeks, there will be more than 35 online, and free, mini-courses for STEM(+) teachers. Each offers a wonderful experience you can take advantage of in your spare time.
