New Grant Opportunity - HP Innovations in Education (Colleges & Universities - USA)

by on 01-14-2009 07:27 AM

Building on 5 years of experience with the HP Technology for Teaching grant program, HP has just announced a new grant opportunity for colleges/universities entitled HP Innovations in Education...

HP seeks proposals from 2 or 4 year colleges and universities that offer degree programs or courses that lead to degrees in engineering, computer science, or information technology. Proposals that will be considered will describe how technology will be used to enable innovations in four areas

  • Leadership Capacity - creating a global network of administrators and key faculty who implement innovative approaches to curriculum, instruction, and the use of technology to enhance undergraduate learning and research

  • Digital Learning Environments - using technology to fundamentally redesign the learning experience in ways that lead to increased student engagement and academic success; can include innovations in online learning, virtual worlds, gaming for learning, and simulations

  • The Undergraduate Design & Research Experience -making engineering real and relevant by involving engineering undergraduate students in design and research challenges that address real needs in society; can include local and/or global service learning

  • Pre-College Outreach - engaging administrators, faculty, and undergraduate students to work with secondary school teachers and students, increasing awareness and interest in high-tech degree programs and careers

Please feel free to share this exciting news with Deans, Department Chairs, IT Directors, and Faculty at eligible institutions. Here are the key facts:

  • HP plans to fund approximately 10 colleges and universities in the USA

  • Each grant is valued at more than $240K in equipment, professional development, and cash

  • Proposals are due March 30th, 2009

  • See www.hp.com/go/hpiie-usa to download the Request for Proposals, which describes all the important details

What other grant opportunities are available for elementary schools?

Thanks.

The HP Innovations in Education grant initiative is also offering grants to school districts that are interested in enhancing math and science education in their secondary schools, which includes middle schools. It's not exactly "elementary schools", but your district may still qualify.

School districts in the US can visit http://www.hp.com/go/hpiie-usa for more information.

I have been very lucky in utilizing the use of video conference. I am the executive of communicating company, when telepresence was originally introduced as a top-of-the-line video conferencing solution designed for high-level executive meetings.

Jim,

Thanx for the information on the new grant opportunity.  My question is about the HP Technology for Teaching Grant for 2009.  Has this been canceled?  I see a lot of wonderful information about the 2008 program on the web pages but nothing announcing a 2009 grant opportunity.  Please advise.

The HP Technology for Teaching program has now "evolved" into the HP Innovations in Education initiative. We took everything we learned from HPTFT and are "taking it up a notch" with the larger HP Innovations in Education grants I blogged about earlier.

More information is available at http://grants.hp.com.

Jim,

We are interested in pusuing the HP Innovations in Education Grant for Colleges and Universities that is due the end of this month.  My question: we have a health information technology associate degree program.  Would this qualify under Information Systems/Information Technology, since HIT is information technology in healthcare?

We look forward to a quick response.

Thank you,

James L. Harter

James - We were purposefully not specific about sub-disciplines within engineering and IT. So if your program's focus is part of the "high tech pipeline" of talent in IT, then you would be eligible!

If you have any other questions, feel free to email hpiie@iste.org.

Thanks for your interest in our program!

Hi Jim,

For the innovation grant for higher ed, is it recommended to have an HP employee invitation? This is stated on the Proposal Overview.

Thanks,

Jeff Rankinen

Jeff - For every region outside the US, the request for proposals is only available by invitation. As such, an HP employee name is required. In the US, it is an open competition, so an HP reference is optional - if someone from HP brought the grant opportunity to your attention, then we'd like to know who! - Jim

Will the HP Innovations in Education (Colleges & Universities-USA) be offered again for 2010?  WIll the deadline be in March again if it is offered?

by on 07-23-2009 04:04 AM

Curry - thanks for your question! It's actually too soon to know exactly what will be offered in 2010. We're in the midst of budget & strategy discussions right now. Do check back in the November timeframe for details!

I am a math teacher at a community college.  We are wanting to integrate computers into our classrooms.  I am working with students now in our developmental classes using the MyMathLab program.  The students are really benefiting from the program, but we do not have the funds to expand with our computers.  Right now, we only have enough computers available for 3 classes to use.  The other developmental classes are missing out on a technology that would really benefit them.

Are there any grants available through HP that would help us?

Thank you,

Sandee Key
