5 Questions to ask your cloud service provider about Tier 1 apps (and 1 to ask yourself)

In a new article at infoworld.com, “5 signs your cloud service provider can't handle tier 1 apps” Thor Olavsrud looks at 5 questions that are very important to make a decision before moving mission-critical applications to the cloud. Here they are, in brief:

1. Does the cloud provider’s pitch focus more on billing and provisioning time rather than reliability?

2. Does the provider have a documented change management process that is well understood and adhered to throughout the entire organization?

3. Does the provider understand the importance of runbooks, and can they show you examples of runbooks they use today for other customers?

4. Does the cloud provider offer an SLA for each product it provides – managed firewall, storage, cloud, etc. – or does it offer a single SLA at the application layer?

5. Does the cloud provider offer access to complementary services like patch management, application performance monitoring and so on?

If you decide to move mission critical applications to your own private cloud, and become your own service provider, is the situation very different?

My answer is no. But that needs to be completed with another question: Do you have the right level of support services for your cloud to make your success secure? For instance, all clouds are multivendor. Having the expertise to support that multivendor environment is essential.

You have a chance to ask your questions and hear from experts on supporting heterogeneous IT environments: Join us for an Expert Chat on how to master multivendor IT, a one-hour online interactive session which will take place on October 4th, 2012, at 11:00am EST (New York time).

Scott Ramsay, Director for Datacenter Care Services in HP’s Technology Services Group, will be interviewed by Dana Gardner, President and Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions, LLC. Scott will talk about HP’s specific expertise, the customer experience, and the benefits delivered by the HP Primary Service Provider service.

Several other experts will respond to most questions live. You can ask your questions in English, or in any of 16 other languages.

Join us by registering for the live session or the replay.
