The Evolution of Remote Monitoring and Support Takes a Giant Step Forward
By Lisa Ann Williams
With the new remote monitoring tool, HP Insight Remote Support 7.0, about to come out (and with my seventeenth year with HP about to start!) I’ve been contemplating my involvement in the evolution of proactive event reporting.
First came Predictive, a modem-based reporting tool that worked well for what it was designed to do. Next came ISEE, Instant Support Enterprise Edition, which included an SPOP or Single Point of Presence which acted much like the advanced version of HP Insight Remote Support 5.x product that’s been around since 2007, and which is a plug-in application to HP Systems Insight Manager (HPSIM).
And now HP has developed HP Insight RS 7.0, which introduces the HP Insight Online secure portal along with our Always On Support portfolio. Insight RS 7.0 is no longer a plug-in application to HPSIM, although it can still interact with HPSIM.
One of the most exciting aspects to the forthcoming release of HP Insight RS 7.0 and the HP Insight Online Portal is that customers who have HP’s new ProLiant Gen8 servers will automatically see a picture of their servers’ status, as well as any pending alerts and service calls, along with other functionality. Customers with other types of systems may manually add their devices to HP Support Center to view support entitlements through the portal as well; however, they will not be able to view non-Gen8 devices events being remotely monitored by Insight Remote Support 5.x Standard or Advanced. Many of these monitored devices will be supported by the HP Insight Online portal automatically with the Insight RS 7.x release in the 2012 summer timeframe.
Capabilities for customers using Insight Online + Insight Remote Support 7.x:
- Instant, secure visibility to critical asset and support alerts
- Track assets and view device configurations
- Create reports for proactive asset and support management
- 24X7 remote monitoring of hardware service events
- Automated support case generation and status tracking
- Insight RS 7.0 users can optionally activate Insight Online device auto-discovery
- Enable your authorized service provider to monitor and support your infrastructure remotely
So, the functionality has evolved exponentially beyond the mere automatic reporting of events to HP. And, for me, being involved with each step has been a thrilling ride!
