The silent disaster lurking

Greg and Chris walking.jpgWhen was the last time you checked to see if all of your data was available?  Do you know how to check to see if anything is missing?  Even if you can see the file name and its given capacity, there may be damage within.

In fact there is a phrase for it:   silent data loss.

Hierarchical Storage Performance: Phase #3 of 3– Performance

Greg and Chris - small-pic.jpgIn my first post on Hierarchical Storage , we looked at some examples of how HP StoreServ 10000 uses “adaptive optimization”, while HP’s P9000 Storage Subsystem uses “smart tiers” to manage high access regions within the storage subsystem. The second blog in the series explored some of the complexities of management and performance monitoring in a dynamic storage environment. Today, I’ll be reviewing the automated movement of data through HP StoreServ Adaptive Optimization, or P9000 SmartTier, as well as describing just how Data Density Reports work.

HP Discover 2013 -- Making it matter!

Chris and Greg Debugging mod.pngHP Discover is just weeks away!  Have you signed up?  Greg and I are extremely excited about this year’s event.  If you are planning to attend, or still on the fence, check out the catalog of sessions and our picks for “must see”.  Additionally, by popular demand, Greg  and I have been invited back to present hands-on-labs, Break-out sessions, as well as speak at the HP Discover Innovation Theatre!  We look forward to seeing you all there!

Hierarchal Storage Performance: Phase #2 of 3 – Spreading the data over the Spindles (Pools)

Greg and Chris - small-pic.jpgIn my previous blog on Hierarchical Storage, we looked at some examples of how enterprise storage arrays spread load over spindles.  The next step in this evolution is wide striping (distributing data over 100 or 1,000’s of spindles), and lastly how to move small segments within the volume of space to faster or slower spindles in which HP StoreServ 10000 uses “adaptive optimization”, or HP’s P9000 Storage Subsystem uses “smart tiers” to manage high access regions within the storage subsystem. In this week’s blog and vlog, we will explore some of the complexities of management and performance monitoring in a dynamic storage environment.

Hierarchical Storage Performance: Phase #1 – Physical Disk, Raid Group, Logical Devices (LDEV)

Greg and Chris - small-pic.jpgLast week, I set the stage for a blog/vlog series that will debunk, I hope, some pre- or misconceptions about what automates data movement between modular and monolithic enterprise arrays.  HP Adaptive Optimization and Smart Tiers leverage the features of today’s enterprise storage arrays and perform data density analysis as a means to leverage lower cost storage. And – they do this while balancing the business service level agreements (SLAs) surrounding data access performance.

  • I am an identical twin. My brother’s name is Greg Tinker and we have been extremely fortunate working similar careers within HP, known to our HP colleagues and many of our customers as "The Tinkers". Our job is to be the technical lead on major business operational outages with millions of Dollars/Euros hanging in the balance. We both have a complete background in architectural, Infrastructure and application environments from both the proactive and reactive side of HP Enterprise Service (HP ES), and HP Enterprise Business (HP EB).
  • Harry is a thirty-nine year veteran of the IT industry, and the Global Lead for HP’s Professions Program. He lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and enjoys spending time with his wife and their extended family of pets, especially his African Grey parrot,Toby.

  • I have been with HP for 13 years, always in Services - first as a Services Channel Sales rep, then a Channel Services Segment Manager, and now, in WW Technology Services Marketing. These may be my formal job titles, but I'm really a Cheerleader for HP Services! I feel that HP has great services, exceptional Technical Experts and Delivery teams, and so many cool things are going on at HP Services. So, stay tuned...
  • Mr_T? Yes, but in name only. No mohawk or gold chains. In real life I'm Jim Turner, a Master Technologist with HP's Integration and Technical Services team. I leverage my 27 years of system, storage, and networking experience to ensure optimal performance with Data Protector and StoreOnce technologies. Many times the source of a problem is not where it appears to be. A broader view of the landscape and a deeper knowledge of system internals are frequently required, and that's precisely what I deliver.
  • I like to listen as much as I like to talk. Why? My 25+ years in the technology industry has taught me that the key to delivering value to customers is to understand what they value in the first place! I developed this passion for customers and consultative selling during my 12 years with Accenture, and I have continued to approach customers in a consultative way during my 12+ year tenure with HP. I also have a passion for HP given my knowledge of our Product and Service Portfolio and the differentiators we possess that position us as a leader in the areas our customers are telling us they want to go. Converged Infrastructure, Converged Cloud, Big Data – and the associated Service and Support implications – all such exciting technology trends where our success will hinge upon our ability to differentiate ourselves versus others in the areas that matter most to our customers. Right up my alley, and I am proud to be part of the great HP team where I know we have the best solutions in the industry!
