Mobile World Congress - Barcelona 2012 - Day 1 highlights

  • GSMA Mobile :
    • 6.6B mobile connections ww, 1B broadband with 36% growth
    • 2011, mobile industry =$ 1.5T, $189M Capex => focus of GSMA: LTE, NFC, RCS, Connected Life
    • By 2015: 9.1B mobile connections, 3.2B broadband, 320M LTE, 1.5B SIM-based-NFC handset
    • Apps, HTML5 :
      • Telefonica Digital and Mozilla announce “OWD” (open Web Device) alliance to create an HTML5 platform to deliver services to smartphones at a low price point. A prototype is available based on Qualcomm, Mozilla, Telefonica.
      • RCS (Rich Communication Services) launches a brand “Joyn” with same look and feel which operators are planning to launch in 2012 (Orange/VF spain, operators in France, Germany, Italy, South Korea). An android beta is available at MWC, and on VF Spain Android Store – www.gsma.com/rcs
      • FT.com (financial time) shared that they now have 15% of their subscriptions via mobile, either HTML5 web app or android app
      • Jamspot launches Appbuilder to enable anyone to build apps on any OS/device in minutes
  • M2M News:
    • GSMA Connected House with Vodafone, AT&T, KT, QualComm, Intel, Accenture, Ericsson, BMW, Nissan, Gemalto etc
      • Demos of embedded SIM mgt from Gemalto, G&D, Vodafone
      • QualComm 2Net demo (Gwy + SaaS back end: SIM mgt, Device mgt, data collection/API)
      • AT&T Digital life demo , sold as SW , SaaS
      • Accenture telematics assurance solution (SaaS back end, android or custom client)
      • Ericsson Social web of things with metering, telematics, home monitoring etc and facebook integration
      • KT home gateway and devices

    • GSMA announces that M2M connections will be 24B by 2020, generating $4.5
    • Ford launches its connected car SYNC feature in Europe with family car BMAX. Emergency & services via the customer’s mobile phone, to provide an affordable connectivity. Service already available in the US. Targeting 13M by 2015
    • Orange and Sorin (medical company) to launch connected pacemaker in Europe and US this summer
    • Orange will also launch the Qualcomm Life mhealth 2Net connectivity service in Europe (home Gwy 2Net + SaaS connectivity back end
    • Ericsson shows its Social Web of Things with facebook integration – and some cool demo with LEGO Mindstorm robot
    • NEC and Transatel (large MVNE) form alliance for M2M in Europ
    • Novatel launches new portfolio of MT devices with Telematics insurance, fleet managemen
    • AT&T offers single SIM access to a global platform  for device manufacturer
    • Wyless M2M provider selects ww location provider Locaid for m2M location
    • Gemalto advanced wless connectivity guarantee 100% on activation and download over NFC, M2M and LTE
  • New Smartphone announcements:
    • Huawei and its Ascend quad core processor, targeting 60M devices in 2012 versus 20M in 2011 !
    • Orange and its Intel Atom Z240 processor, to be launched in France and UK this summer. Smartphone penetration for Orange in Europe is 50%
    • Sony who completed its purchase of Ericsson handset business last week ($1B) announce new Xperia devices with 1GHz dual core processor, HDMI/NFC, Android 2.3/4 and access to music and video unlimited Sony Entertainment Network
    • Huawei and its ‘one smartphone’ Android 4.0 portfolio. One X, largest, is a 1.5GHz quad core NVidia processor
  • LTE news:
    • Telefonica covers FIRA with the 1st LTE 2.6GHz trial, delivered by ALU, with Samsung Galaxy 8.9 LTE tablets. 30 users per Cell with average speed of 30Mb/s, 10 times more than the 3G. theoretical speed are 100Mb/s downlink and 40-60Mb/s uplink
    • Wifi offload, Hetnet (heterogeneous portfolio)
      • HetNets are more than small cells. The development of HetNets will take in self-organizing network (SON) capabilities, interference management techniques, new backhaul technologies, and operators' network management systems. Standardisation being done within 3GPP and IEEE.
      • Cisco: Cisco strong push on wifi for mobile operators : mobile packet core ASR5000 providing handoff between Wi-Fi, femtocells, 3G, and 4G, Cisco cleanAir to clean wifi spectrum and improve QoS of carrier wifi, VideoStream over wifi improved etc - Cisco has deployed 12M wifi access points and is becoming one of the champions of small cells and wifi offload - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns341/ns524/ns673/solution_overview_c22-642482.html
      • Ericsson whose mobile market share increased from 32 to 38%, launches pico base station with integrated wifi access to its Hetnet portfolio. They had announced the acquisition of wifi vendor BelAir last week
      • ALU lightradio wifi to provide seamless handover 3G,4G,wifi : Secure wifi service Gwy 7750, 5780 dynamic service controller (new) and optional wifi on lightradio small cell (femto, metro)
      • The Smallcell forum and OMA have signed an agreement to provide APIs for the small cell environment

  • Sigge Andreasson is Worldwide Solutions Marketing Manager for OSS Transformation, CMS at HP. Sigge has more than 25 years of experience in the telecom and software industries, and has held a number of different positions during his career with HP, spanning telecom engineering, pre-sales and marketing. Sigge holds a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
  • Julia Mason-Ochinero is WW CME Marketing Lead, HP Enterprise Marketing. In this role, Julia is responsible for driving dialog with CSPs on how they can transition to sustainable, profitable business models and enter into co-opetition with over-the-top (OTT) content providers who are changing this industry’s landscape. She joined HP in 2010 from Accel Partners (where she worked as a consultant.) Prior to Accel, Julia held marketing leadership positions with companies including Adobe, Nuance, OpenWave, Novell, Nuance Communications and RealNetworks. She began her career in Chicago working with organizations including AT Kearney, Andersen Consulting and Ameritech. She currently resides in Silicon Valley.
  • Marco has over 15 years’ experience working on strategy and innovation projects for major clients in the Telecom and Media Industries. He helps clients to improve their business performance through the adoption of strategically-driven technology solutions.
  • Marie-Sophie Masselot is bringing her thought leadership in business transformation in the telecom arena, thanks to her latest role as the marketing lead for the HP Solution Consulting Services practice worldwide. She is coming with a technical background as computer sciences engineer, having held different positions from software development through supply chain or sales support in telecom companies.
  • Marie-Paule Odini is a seasoned HP executive, bring over 25 years of telecom experience. She has deep expertise in both the networking and IT environments, bridging voice and data. Marie-Paule is the HP CTO for Europe, responsible for the Communication and Media Solution organization, focused on customer innovation and emerging trends. She leads the technology discussions for M2M, Analytics and Cloud. She seats on ETSI and other standard bodies. She is a frequent industry speaker and editor in professional magazines, blogs on HP Telecom IQ and tweets on CMS twitter account. Marie-Paule’s prior responsibilities include managing HP’s worldwide VoIP program, HP’s wireless LAN program, and HP’s Service Delivery program. Since joining HP in 1987, she has held positions in technical consulting, sales development and marketing in Europe and in the Americas. Those roles have focused on strategic and operational responsibility for Networking, IT and operations. Marie-Paule holds a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Utah State University and business education from INSEAD, Paris. Prior to joining HP, Marie-Paule spent five years with France-Telecom/Orange research and development labs, defining architecture and value-added services launch for corporate customers. She also worked with standard bodies and industry forums at that time. She enjoys skiing and outdoors in general.
  • Oded Ringer overlooks HP's worldwide marketing strategy for Actionable Customer Intelligence (ACI) solutions. With many years in the Telecom industry, at companies like Alcatel-Lucent and TTI-Telecom, Oded focuses on Go-To-Market strategies bringing together Products, Business, Operations, Sales and Marketing.
  • Richard Arthur has enjoyed the last two decades of the wild ride that has been the communications industry since deregulation. He is currently leading the Services and Solutions Marketing team in HP’s Communication and Media Solutions business unit. This role embraces transformative telecom solutions including telecom cloud services, outsourcing, solution lifecycle services, OSS/BSS and network platforms. Richard is also managing the CloudSystem Service Provider Program in HP.
  • Grace has initiated and implemented in last decade the first support contracts for large Telecom operators like France Telecom, Vodafone, BT...Today she is in charge of developping support services which are maturing with a shift from reactive break/fix models to more-proactive and enhanced offerings that add business value.
