Innovation, adoption and value…

innovation cloud.pngI was in a discussion this morning with a couple people focused on innovation within their organization. At one point during the discussion, it was clear that although each was talking about innovation from their perspective, they were not thinking about it from an enterprise view. I tried to drive it home by saying:

1)      Hardware without software is turning into a commodity

2)      Software without hardware is just using your imagination

3)      Applying these without an understanding of the business objective is just a hobby

Do you agree with that perspective? Understanding the various innovator's context can greatly improve the effectiveness of the innovation. For the innovator, understanding that there are other context possibilities then theirs will help them evangelize and gather support.

This week I was working with technologists from across HP to pull together our internal technical conference so thinking about ideas and innovation consumed much of effort.

Sure - economic value creation comes from the chain of interactions from whole-of-business (or enterprise) business model through line of business models to functional models then technology models. It doesn't just flow from left to right though as orthodoxy would have it. Sometimes a solution does find a problem to solve just as a problem finds a solution.
