Is Coopitition even a choice any more? A common understanding is needed.

commonality.pngA while back I wrote a position piece about the changing state of interaction between entities in business that is titled: Collaborate with the competition? Yes! Why coopitition is a win-win. I’d almost forgotten about it but it was finally released this week.

In these days of choosing cloud service providers, outsourcers, contractors and other entities that work to meet goals, having a clear understanding of what you want and need is important. Having a common framework and definition is as well.

I was talking with someone the other day about what services are and it became clear that my perspective on services was very different from theirs. They were coming at the problem from the product perspective so “services” to them was ensuring that the product was installed properly… My view was that services is more the installation, integration and operation of the product today, tomorrow and in the future – getting the product installed is a nice start but only a start.

Unfortunately, having a common objective separated by a common language is an issue that can’t be underestimated.

Coopitition is really becoming a competitive differentiator. With the emerging technologies you shared during the HP Labs' Big Bets for the Future webcast, clearly collaborative efforts will be more important than ever for the truly dynamic enterprise.
