What is the role of self-awareness in automation?

robot.pngA few weeks back I had a blog entry about Droids taking over work. Since then I have put a couple of comments on the entry about other Robot related advances. Here is an article about a research team trying to tackle one of the fundamentals of being human – self-awareness.  It is so foundational that we probably don’t even think about how concepts like:

  • That is my hand
  • That is me

are used to do even the most common tasks.  When you think about how often we used the concept of self-awareness in our daily activities, it makes you realize how far robotics and automation approaches have to go.

An interesting notion but robots have a capability that average humans don't - they can communicate with other robots and devices and control these as parts of themselves. So, self awareness in a robotic environment is a far broader concept than its immediate physical characteristics.

Good point, we can't think of the possibilies with the same limitations we view ourselves.
