Big Data — the end of business-as-usual?

By Donald Livengood, HP Distinguished Technologist/Strategist

Is Big Data “changing the whole equation for business,” as stated by a recent Wall Street Journal article?

Yes. The notion of finding patterns in many different data sources definitely allows businesses to alter or improve the way they do business.

How do they go about doing that? There are two important considerations: the first is a business strategy that includes use cases and goals you are trying to attain from your data. The second is an infrastructure strategy that incorporates Big Data technologies, and the impact these technologies may have, in your existing infrastructure and datacenter(s). From an infrastructure standpoint, scalability, integration, management, compliance, and monitoring are all important — just as they are with any other technology residing in the datacenter. Marrying your business view and your infrastructure view, and building a strategy around those, will lead to a solid Big Data solution.

I had a quick discussion recently with Bill Laberis, Content Director for the Enterprise CIO Forum, that was recorded in a short 8 minute video. Take a look and feel free to comment:
