Chart Your Journey to Truly Mobile, Truly Unified Communications

by Tim Swiader, Senior Program Manager, HP Technology Consulting

Unified Communications (UC) … click to dial … ad hoc conferencing … virtual whiteboard … virtual classroom … anywhere anytime … BYOD … desktop phones…headsets… SPLAT as your brain cells explode. As if the world was not complicated enough (or exciting enough!) for us IT people, now users want – no, wait, demand – UC on all their devices. While this is challenging…also very exciting.

This year seems like the year that people are moving past their infrastructure and looking to capitalize on enablement.  Welllll…wait.  Are we not emerging on the other side of a really bad economy?  What about the unprecedented pressure on the infrastructure (stretching the end-of-life, for example)?

Sure, but your CIO just came in and said make it happen.  Where do you turn?  How do you do this?

Wait … isn’t Enterprise Connect happening?  Isn’t HP there?  Answers are YES and YES!!!

This year you will hear some pretty coolio stuff about how HP will help you along the exciting road ahead.  First, you should book yourself into a 1-hour micro Mobility Transformation Experience Workshop (MTEW) hosted by HP’s Technology Services (TS). This is a condensed version of the MTEW that helps you understand HP’s approach to building the business/IT alignment for mobility initiatives. Be ready, as the MTEW is a fast-paced and intensive experience. It is a journey, and not a lecture or training. The micro version of the MTEW will help you decide whether the next step of your Mobility journey should include doing a deeper MTEW focused specifically on your business. HP TS…on the journey with you, not behind you!

After you finish the micro-MTEW you will want to head over to the HP Network people and talk about the UC ecosystem.  Another coolio (yeah, I know, but I have to say it again) part of your journey is hearing about the partnership HP has built with Microsoft’s UC people. Microsoft brings their Lync platform to your UC toolbox.  I just finished installing the Lync platform within a security company (DON’T ASK!!) that has more than 100 and less than 500 offices (not going to make it easy for yea to guess either) in North America.  All I can say is it works and it is solid. When we encountered technical problems (turned out to be configuration issues) that we could not solve, Microsoft was ALL OVER IT. Reading SIP (session initiation protocol) traces…Microsoft was on it!!  Microsoft has some solid UC people.  I have been around UC for better part of seven years…the Microsoft people get it!

Running out of room here, but after your Lync discussion, ask the HP Network people about their thoughts on BYOD.  Better get that water bottle refilled!!

Remember, it’s a journey and not a destination!

If you’re quick, you can still get a discount on your registration at Enterprise Connect, or a free expo pass, by using the priority code “CMHP13” at the registration page.
