DCIM business value, security and HP Converged Management Consulting Services

Security is another domain one must prioritize when defining datacenter competencies.

Today, the most basic CCTV system for a site with about 100 racks can cost a minimum of $50.K (USD) to configure a system with ~40 cameras and a basic DVR system.   Such a setup will generate about 4000 hours of video per week, assuming that we are operating within the context of basic activities in the datacenter. Additionally, you will need to assign at least one operator to “monitor” the movements on 40 monitors. The CCTV real-time assessment should ideally be conducted during all three shifts running in your datacenter. But -think about it: That need can translate to a minimum investment of $10.K USD a month for a site. The chance for one event – on one of forty screens - to be missed in a shift is significant.

By installing a video analytic system you may be able to reduce the number of operators overall.  By sharing analytic functions in all sites, as well, you will be assessing the events captured on each video screen in their totality, something not possible when human operators review the same with less than “fresh eyes”. The associated costs for this analytic system will be “zero-sum” when a security event is detected and averted, and the cost of downtime to the business is also eliminated.

The usage of analytic versus physical check is also potentially going to reduce CAPEX in new sites or in places where physical security is elevated as a business concern by a customer. That can be due by new regulations. As an example, in a country like Singapore when local authorities request that banks provide a more detailed level of site security   it   changes the way that local financial institutions select their future business sites. It also triggers additional costs for the site owner to achieve the right level of compliance so that they can   deliver their services to the customer business, or to simply keep the customer in their sites.

My point is that by leveraging existing CCTV data and using software to analyze this asset, it will cost less than deploying new devices and conducting new training for the security team. Additionally, one might find that maintaining the security service level cost, year after year, is comparable to the usage of big data and video analytic features.

Finally, in regards to the cost of downtime, how will CMCS  impact that domain? The cost of downtime varies by industries, as well as by company size.  But the point is that this cost is not insignificant.   According to a recent Dunn & Bradstreet report, 59% of Fortune 500 companies experience a minimum of 1.6 hours of downtime per week. This downtime does not systematically affect all employees or processes at the same time, but if you look at the attached table, you can see the financial impact:  costs can escalate quickly.

It is easy to imagine that today more than one business application can be impacted by one failure on a highly-virtualized platform. With the new style of IT, all business processes and operations are integrated and must be supported.   The proliferation of SAAS solutions can also financially impact downtime outside of a single enterprise.  A predictive, granular converged management solution is necessary to ensure the successful delivery of services in the new style of IT.

HP Converged Management Consulting Services help customers to define the right design and technology features mix to secure and manage the KPIs and SLAs necessary to deliver services to their business consumers. The objective of these services is to also to reduce the risk of implementing an inadequate datacenter infrastructure management (DCIM) system that could compromise technical integration with other datacenter tools. This could be a costly mistake, and impact overall performance because of reduced control and flexibility necessary to achieve the expected OPEX improvements.
