Discover the Foundations and Frameworks for your IT

I've just come back to my HP job after taking 8 weeks leave to get an extension to my house well underway. As an owner-builder, you realise how important it is to get the foundations right. It takes a lot of time to set out the levels, and then arrange for the excavation. We got hit by a rainstorm during the concrete pour, but thankfully my preparation meant everything ended up in the right place! For the frame I have chosen steel - it's straight and true and makes connecting the floor to the walls to the roof a fairly straightforward job for an amateur.

Foundation and framework

It goes to say, that establishing your IT architecture has similar challenges. As a network guy, I see the importance of getting a solid network backbone in place - manageable, secure, and with the performance to be able to take the load. While you think you can come in later to "underpin" if it starts to falter - your risk of upsetting whatever is in production is more likely. Many of the decisions you make today can help prevent the need to "knockdown rebuild" approach. Have you considered readiness to move to IPv6, or the flexibility of SDN (Software Defined Networking)? It is much better to have these foundations in place - prepared to accommodate the business applications that you might not have quite foreseen.

Is the network and the infrastructure it supports ready to grow - for instance being able to choose to moving components into the cloud, or being able to support an increasingly mobile and BYOD equipped workforce means having good and resilient connectivity to the Internet.?

What methodologies to implementing and operating the environment are you considering, like ITIL? Success in building - both a house and IT infrastructure - depends on good planning, good choices and determined implementation.

I'd love to be able to get to HP Discover in Frankfurt, Germany from 4-6 December. There looks to be a huge range of presentation on offer - with both industry technologists from HP and other partners presenting, as well as insight from customers. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity to see what people have done that is successful in establishing a solid IT environment. If you can get there, enjoy the time of learning, and prepare yourself to get your infrastructure started on a firm footing.
