HP Technology Services for Windows 2003 End-of-Support and Migration that partners can rely on

Hande Sahin-BahceciToday, HP and Microsoft formally rolled out the Windows 2003 End-of-Support initiative for channel partners at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Washington D.C.

Next year Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2003/R2. This can have a dramatic impact on businesses, because without any more updates or patches from Microsoft, IT infrastructures running on Windows 2003, as well as applications and workloads supported by this infrastructure, will be less stable and secure:

  • Risk - this increases because automated updates and security patches will no longer be available, making compliance also problematic.
  • Cost - fees for a custom support agreement’s first year are usually in the range of $200K and can compound. Also, existing physical hardware may be 5-7 years old, and expensive to maintain. If you add the opportunity cost of not modernizing the IT infrastructure (inability to take advantage of the latest IT trends - cloud, mobility, big data etc.) then costs increase even more.
  • Complexity- There are different options, and there is no direct upgrade path to Windows 2012 (particularly from x86 architecture). The Windows 2003-based solutions will get more complex, as they can’t take advantage of modern IT infrastructure and management tools

In addition to providing solutions, sales, marketing, training and financing offers for channel, the HP Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Migration Program also includes a suite of consulting, support, and education services, all of which can be sold through partners. Some of these services - the support and education services ones (marked * in the list below) - can be also delivered through HP ServiceOne enterprise partners.

    • HP Packaged Consulting services such as HP Transformation Workshop for Windows 2003, HP Migration Assessment Service for Windows 2003, and HP Training Needs Advisement to help partners sell and extend their consulting capabilities.

    • *HP Installation and Start-up Services for Windows 2012 comprising the installation, configuration, and startup activities for selected Microsoft Windows Server products.

    • *HP Proactive Care, which provides full hardware and Microsoft operating system support for Windows 2012 environments and prevents 66% of potential incidents before they occur, as well as HP Foundation Care, which provides access to HP technical resources for help resolving hardware and software-related issues.

    • *HP Datacenter Care – Partners can sell Datacenter Care for supporting, optimizing and evolving the customer’s IT environment under 1 contract through flexible options.

    • HP Education Services- Partners can take advantage of up to 20% off select HP Education Services trainings for Microsoft to prepare their organization and staff for the end-of-support program (learn more about that 20% discount program here).
