Thinking Outside of the Box

I came across this infographic and thought it painted a good picture of how water is used in the production of electricity, part of which runs data centers. Although the graphic focuses more on the water used by different generation techniques, it also serves as reminder of the importance of energy use efficiency in the planning, design, implementation and assurance phases of a project. More efficient data centers not only use less water and produce less greenhouse gas emissions, but they will save money in the long run.

Furthermore, we need to be concerned about water use beyond the limits of our data center projects. While certainly we have no influence on the water efficiency of the power plants that generate electricity for our data center projects, if we are aware of clean and renewable energy techniques that have a smaller negative impact on the environment, we can help our clients make decisions by providing solid information and analysis on the advantages, disadvantages and compromises that are made to optimize the entire project.
